Your water meets all Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL's) as established by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The HMUA takes nearly 2,000 samples and has the water samples tested for more than 100 different parameters. Please view the most recent Annual Water Quality Report below. NO. The HMUA does not add fluoride to the water. We have carefully researched this subject and believe that the use of 1940?s technology to solve current perceived problems is inappropriate. Fluoridation of Water supplies began in 1945, long before fluoridated toothpaste (Crest) was introduced and became commercially available in the US. Today, an appropriate fluoride dosage can be received in several ways and include brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, fluoride rinse, fluoride tablets administered under the supervision of a parent or guardian and by receiving fluoride treatments from a dentist. The addition of fluoride into the water supplied by the HMUA would impact the environment and all customers without regard to age, personal sensitivity to fluoride, or personal choice of those customers. The HMUA has voiced opposition to mandatory fluoridation (Letter to Legislators and Resolution 05-2329) on several occasions. See additional links about Fluoride in drinking water.
The decision of whether to add fluoride to the water is a fundamental question that affects the public health of all HMUA customers. In the absence of a fluoridation mandate, the HMUA believes that the use of fluoride and the appropriate fluoride dosage should be a personal decision between you and your dentist and doctor.
